What these terms cover

These terms are the agreement between you and Translate for your use of this website, its translation service and its API. By creating an account, ticking the consent box when you sign up, or otherwise using the service, you accept these terms.

If you use the service on behalf of an organisation, you confirm that you are authorised to accept these terms for it.

Our service and the three tiers

We translate between Sinhala, Tamil and English — Sri Lanka's three official and administrative languages — in any direction. The service is offered at three tiers. What you receive, and what it is worth legally, depends on the tier you choose:

• Draft. A machine translation produced automatically, with numbers, dates and official terms checked by software. It is a convenience for understanding and drafting only — it is not reviewed by a person and is not a certified or sworn document.
• Reviewed. A qualified human reviewer reads every line against your source text and corrects the draft. This is a quality service for accurate everyday and institutional use. Unless you also order certification, a reviewed translation is not a sworn certification and carries no attestation of legal force.
• Certified. A translator enrolled in the Register of Sworn Translators, Ministry of Justice, Sri Lanka, personally reviews, signs and attests the translation as a faithful rendering of the document you submitted. Only this tier produces a certified document, and it carries a unique serial number and QR code that anyone can verify.

Machine and AI output is not a certification

Draft and machine-assisted output — including any AI-generated translation — is provided for convenience only. It is not a sworn or certified translation, has no legal or official standing, and must not be presented to any court, ministry, embassy, bank or other authority as a certified document.

Only a translation certified by a sworn translator through this service, and marked as certified, is a certified document. If you are unsure which tier a document needs, ask the receiving authority before you order.

Certified translations and sworn translators

Certified translations are signed by translators enrolled in the Register of Sworn Translators, Ministry of Justice, Sri Lanka. The certifying translator is responsible for the accuracy of the certified translation they sign.

We facilitate the order, the quality process, the seal and the verification record. We are not ourselves a court, a government body, or the Ministry of Justice, and we do not decide whether a particular authority will accept a given document — acceptance is always at the discretion of the authority you present it to.

Your responsibilities and acceptable use

When you use the service, you agree to:

• Provide source text or documents that are complete, legible and lawful, and that you have the right to submit for translation.
• Not use the service for unlawful, fraudulent, infringing or abusive purposes, and not attempt to disrupt, overload or reverse-engineer it.
• Keep your account and sign-in secure, and take responsibility for activity that happens under your account.
• Never alter, forge or misrepresent a certified document, its serial number, seal or QR code, and never present machine output as a certified translation.
• Review any translation for your own purposes before relying on it — especially where names, numbers, dates or amounts matter.

We may suspend or close accounts that breach these terms.

Fees, the prepaid wallet, and refunds

Draft translations include a free monthly allowance. Reviewed and certified translations, and any machine translation beyond the free allowance, are paid for from a prepaid wallet held in Sri Lankan rupees (Rs). Each month the free allowance is applied first, then your wallet balance. Prices are shown before you confirm an order.

Top-ups add funds to your wallet. Machine translations already produced are generally non-refundable, because the work is delivered instantly. For reviewed and certified orders, you may cancel for a refund of the wallet charge before a reviewer or translator has begun work; once work has begun, we refund only the portion not yet performed, on a reasonable assessment. If we cannot complete an order you have paid for, we refund the charge to your wallet.

Wallet funds are for use on this service. The wallet is not a bank account or a deposit-taking or payment service.

Accuracy, disclaimers and liability

We take real care with every translation, and the reviewed and certified tiers exist precisely to raise accuracy. But no translation — human or machine — can be guaranteed free of error, and meaning can legitimately differ between renderings. You are responsible for checking that a translation is fit for your purpose before you rely on or submit it.

To the extent the law allows, the service is provided "as is", and we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss. Where we are found liable in connection with a paid order, our liability is limited to the fee you paid for that order. Nothing in these terms limits any liability that cannot lawfully be limited, including the certifying translator's own attestation.

Verification, seals and revocation

Every certified document carries a unique serial number and a QR code. Anyone can confirm a document at our verification page — free and without an account. The verification page shows only the document's status, languages and certification date; it never shows the document's contents.

A seal is valid while the verification page reports it as valid. We may mark a seal as revoked or superseded if it was issued in error, if a corrected version is issued, or if it was obtained through fraud or misrepresentation. A revoked seal stays on record so that anyone checking the serial can see its true status.

Privacy and your data

How we collect, use and protect your personal data — and your rights under Sri Lanka's Personal Data Protection Act, No. 9 of 2022 — is set out in our Privacy Policy. We do not sell your personal data or the text you submit.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as the service grows — for example, as document upload and new tiers launch. When we make material changes we will update this page, and significant changes may also be notified in the app. Continuing to use the service after an update means you accept the revised terms.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of Sri Lanka, and any dispute is subject to the courts of Sri Lanka. The service is operated from Colombo, Sri Lanka.
